If the highest division in English football remained as the English First Division....?

It's impossible to say what might have happened. What I can say for certain is that it was a much fairer system back then, there were far more teams that could the league, or at least dream of winning the league. Now its only four at the most. The formation of the premiership was the worst thing ever to happen to football in this country.
