What age is appropriate to take away pacifiers?

My son is almost 1. He uses a soother at night & sometimes in the car or if he is really really fussy. I think it needs to go soon. Myself, I think it looks strange once they get walking around good to see a soother in the mouth. So my question is what age did you wean your child off of a pacifer? Thanks :)
